Safety Act Worries Indiepreneurs

A Consumer Safety Act requiring testing of all goods made for children ages 12 and under has Indiepreneurs concerned, and rightfully so.

The required testing can cost upwards from $100 or more  per product tested as each ingredient of a product requires separate testing. On a garment, for instance, the buttons, fabric, trim, zipper, etc. must each be tested separately.

While large manufacturers will undoubtedly streamline the task within their operations, the impact on micro businesses could be devastating.

Indiepreneur.org applauds safety for children. Lead poisoning is a serious concern that needs addressed. However, the burden on cottage and micro businesses will certainly put them out of business — only adding to our economic woes.

I urge you to get in touch with your Congressional representatives and join the conversation about CSPIA HR4040. Perhaps a waiver for small businesses until an affordable test is made available is the answer.  The first segment of the bill goes into effect Feb. 10.

An option for handcrafters and small manufacturers is to buy materials ONLY from suppliers who have done the required testing for you. Expect, however, for your costs to rise.

Vintage resellers take heart. We are exempt from testing requirements.
